Press Release Nestle Malaysia Regarding Maggi Noodles
The Health Ministry has reassured Malaysians that Nestlé-owned MAGGI Noodles in the country are safe to be consumed, after India withdrew the noodles from its shelves on June 3, citing unsafe levels of lead in the snack.
Its director Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the instant noodles in Malaysia were not imported from India, and that the ministry had also verified with the company producing the noodles and found it had gone through the right procedures to ensure it is safe for consumption.
“Checks by the ministry have found that MAGGI Noodles in Malaysia are indeed safe to be eaten.
"We have also verified with the company, and found that they have gone through the necessary steps to make sure they are safe,” he said in a statement today.
“In addition, the ministry has also done checks on various other instant noodle brands sold in local stores, including those which were imported. Those too do not contain an unsafe level of lead as is permitted under the Food Regulations 1985,” he added.
Dr Hisham however said that if any parties were found to be guilty of importing, distributing or selling poisonous food or that may affect a person’s health, harsh penalties will be handed out, with a fine of not more than RM100,000 or prison not more than 10 years or both, under Section 13 of the Food Act 1983.
He added that the public need not worry on the safety status of the MAGGI Noodles as the monitoring and enforcement of food safety by the ministry was always ongoing to ensure its safe.
“If consumers have any doubts on whether food is safe to be consumed, they can always file a complain with the ministry,” he said.
